Pre and Post Natal Fitness Courses

Pre and Post Natal Fitness Courses

Many people are well aware of the benefits that exercise and physical fitness can bring in helping to experience a normal, healthy pregnancy.

But exercise in the prenatal and postnatal period must be approached with care.

Pre-Natal

As pregnancy progresses, the body undergoes a number of physical changes to cater for the growing baby. These physiological changes make good posture, cardiovascular health, and strength crucial to a healthy and comfortable pregnancy.

Pregnant women can participate in a number of our classes during the first and second trimester, including BodyBalance, Yoga, BodyPump and Aquafit. Our expert instructors can help give options and alternative exercises where necessary. Please ensure that you speak to your class instructor and advise them that you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant and are just starting to exercise, you should take it slowly and keep to low-intensity workouts. Pregnancy is not a time to achieve great improvements in fitness.

Post-Natal

The postnatal body has also undergone dramatic, significant changes, and clients who have recently given birth must take care to only engage in exercises that take these changes into consideration.

Postnatal exercises, which are aimed at strength training, flexibility training, and cardiovascular training, are focused on improving your clients' physical and mental well-being while still caring for their healing, postnatal bodies.

Like prenatal exercises, postnatal exercises are generally aimed at light cardiovascular workouts combined with light weight training, both of which are designed to:

Restore muscle strength

  • Firm up the postnatal body, including the abdominal muscles
  • Promote weight loss
  • Improve mood and relieve stress
  • Increase energy level

Bullet Proof Your Body

Bullet Proof Your Body (BPYB) is a six-week exercise block for people who have recently given birth who want to strengthen their bodies for pregnancy and beyond. BPYB runs term time only.

The course consists of two 45-minute strength classes per week held in Studio 3 on Tuesday and Thursdays at 9.30am, and participants can bring their babies along too. With BPYB there are no child care issues and as a new mum you don't have to have the guilt of leaving your new born with someone else to get your activity in.

Parents are encouraged to use our 1857 Bistro either before or after to socialise with the other mothers as having the support of other new mums is important for your wellbeing.

The course focuses on strengthening the glutes, back and hips as well as strengthening in movement patterns that support carrying a baby around.

Please note that all mothers must pass their 6-week post-natal doctors check-up, unless their delivery was via caesarean in which case we would ask them to hold off until 10 weeks post-delivery.
